NOTICE OF RACE

The Figawi Race is a PHRF pursuit race in Nantucket Sound.

1          RULES

            The Race will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS).

2          ADVERTISING

            Boats may be required to display advertising chosen and supplied by the organizing authority.

3          ELIGIBILITY AND SAFETY

3.1       The Race is open to mono hull cruising/racing boats with a minimum LOA of 24 feet and a 2009 Performance Handicap Racing Fleet New England (PHRF NE) racing handicap no higher than 210.

The Figawi Race Committee reserves the right to consider the seaworthiness of any applicant yacht and refuse entry of any yacht that it deems unsuitable for the conditions of the race.

3.4

            The PHRF fleet must comply with ISAF Offshore Special Regulations Equipment List for Category 3.

Please pay special attention to the following provisions of the list:

·         All boats must have lifelines in accordance with Section 3.14.

·         All boats must carry a marine radio in accordance with Section 3.29.

·         All boats must have sail numbers ON THE SAIL (not manufacturers numbers or logos) in accordance with Section 4.01 - NO EXCEPTIONS

·         All boats must carry personal equipment (lifejackets, etc) in accordance with Section 5.

Note US Sailing prescription Section 5.01.2:

US SAILING prescribes that all personnel on deck shall wear personal floatation while starting and finishing without exception, and at all other times except when the Captain of the boat directs that it may be set aside.

Note US Sailing prescription Section 5.09:

US SAILING prescribes that the "Quick-Stop" man-overboard procedure shall be practiced aboard the yacht at least once annually. A certificate of such practice shall be signed by participating crew members and kept aboard the yacht.

4.0              DIVISIONS

The fleet will be divided into classes. Boats will be assigned to a spinnaker or non-spinnaker class as entered. Classes will be further divided by handicap rating. Saturday's race to Nantucket is a pursuit race with each boat starting on her own time as assigned by the scratch sheet. Monday's return race to Hyannis will be a standard start with Saturday's classes reassigned to division starts as published in the sailing instructions.

           

5.0              HANDICAP CERTIFICATES

5.1       General         

A copy of the boat's 2009, valid PHRF NE handicap rating certificate must be received by Figawi at the fax number listed below before the deadline of

May 10, 2009. Please go to www.phrfne.org for further information on obtaining a rating. Failure to provide a current rating certificate by the deadline will result in the boat's omission from the scratch sheets and race results.

6.0              ENTRY PROCESS

6.1       Application

            Figawi only accepts applications online at www.figawi.com.

6.2       Entry Deadline

            The deadline for submission of entries is Saturday, May 10, 2009. Figawi reserves the right to accept or reject entries before or after the deadline date.

6.3              Completed Entries

An entry will be considered complete upon receipt of the online application, copy of 2009 PHRF NE valid rating, completed crew lists, and payment of all fees by the May 10 deadline.

6.4              Refunds

No refunds for any reason, including cancellation of race, after May 10, 2009.

7.0              ENTRY FEES

The application fee for sailboat entry is $300.00.

The application fee for powerboats entry is $600.00.

The paid application includes 2 bracelets for tent entry on Nantucket for Saturday and Sunday.

9.0              REGISTRATION

Only captains or their authorized representative will be allowed to pick up race materials during registration at HYC. They must show a photo id.

9.1       Captains' Meeting

There is no formal meeting during Registration. There will be Figawi Race Committee members available to answer questions.

10        SAILING INSTRUCTIONS/SCRATCH SHEETS

Copies of the Sailing Instructions and scratch sheets will be provided in the Captains' registration packet. Amendments will be posted on the Official Figawi Board.

11        VENUE

            The start of the Hyannis - Nantucket race is off the Hyannisport Jetty.

            The start of the Nantucket - Hyannis race is off the Nantucket Jetty.

12        THE COURSES

            The courses to be sailed are described in the Sailing Instructions.

13        PRIZES

Prizes will be given as follows:

13.1     Figawi Race - Hyannis to Nantucket

·         First through Fourth place for each division depending on the number of boats in the division.

·         Cape Cod Marine Trades Trophy - Best corrected time by a Cape Cod entrant, racing division and cruising division.

·         Jeffrey Carter Foster Team Race Award - First, Second, and Third place teams

·         Figawi Spirit Award

·         Pamela Trussell Duggan Award

13.2          Figawi Reverse Race - Nantucket to Hyannis

·         First and Second for each class

·         Herreshoff Museum Award - best overall finish for cruising and racing class

14                DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

Competitors participate in the Race Weekend entirely at their own risk. Figawi Inc, Figawi Race Committee, and the Figawi Board of Governors will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

15                ISLAND FESTIVITIES

Figawi Bracelets are required for entrant into the tent on Nantucket. Bracelets can be purchase online and a limited amount at Registration. There are no bracelets sold on Nantucket.

All bracelets must be ordered online under the Captains name.

With the exception of the Sunday afternoon lobster bake and the Sunday award ceremony, all events in the Figawi tent require participants to be 21 years of age and to be wearing a Figawi Race Weekend bracelet. ID's and bracelets will be checked every time. Plan on it.

Bracelets will be distributed in the captains' packets at registration.

CONDUCT

Lobster Bake

Tickets for the lobster bake can be purchased in advance online, at Registration, or at the Race Office in Nantucket. Tickets are $45 each for Lobster or Steak and $35 for Chicken. Entrance into the tent is denied without a Bake ticket. Families are welcome.

Awards Ceremony

Awards are presented in the tent on Sunday at 1630. No bracelet is required for this event entry. Minors are welcome.

16                CONDUCT
The boat owner/skipper will be responsible for the conduct of their crew offshore and onshore. We have been guests of the people of Nantucket for 35 years - we will not allow a serious breech of good conduct by any participant to endanger this relationship. The Figawi Committee and the Nantucket Boat Basin reserve the right to eject any boat, its skipper and crew, from NBB and to reject any future entry to Figawi in the event of a serious breech of good conduct. Remember, the Town of Nantucket does not allow alcoholic beverages in public. If you leave the Figawi Tent or NBB property with an alcoholic beverage, you will be subject to arrest.


17                DOCKAGE

HYANNIS

·         Hyannis Yacht Club provides moorings at no charge for Figawi entrants on Friday evening. They do not take reservations. Moorings are on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact the launch driver on channel 69 when you enter the mooring field.

·         Hyannis Marina has slips available. This is not included in any fees paid to Figawi. Contact them at 508-790-4000.

NANTUCKET BOAT BASIN

·         Figawi has a partnership with Nantucket Boat Basin for the weekend of Figawi. In order to secure a slip in Nantucket, you must be a registered participant with Figawi.

·         The Figawi NBB special weekend rate is available only on the form found online at www.figawi.com. Please mail or fax the application directly to NBB with payment. Instructions are on the form.

·         Slip assignments are distributed in the captains' packet. They are not given out before Friday, May 22.

·         Nantucket Boat Basin reserves the right to raft boats if necessary.

·         YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION FROM NBB REGARDING YOUR PAPERWORK, PAYMENT  OR SLIP ASSIGNMENT. Figawi will be in touch with you if there are any problems.

NANTUCKET MOORINGS

·         If you would prefer, there are also moorings available in Nantucket through Nantucket Moorings. Figawi does not currently have a partnership with Nantucket Moorings so please reserve moorings directly with them. They are available both by reservation (www.nantucketmoorings.com) and on a first come, first served basis. Call Nantucket Moorings on VHF Channel 68 or (508) 228-4472 as you pass Brant Island and their launch will direct you to your mooring.
